It is sad to see the lack of support for a club sport that has such a profound impact on the development and maturity of young adults. This will only serve to hurt Colby college in the long run, dissuading alumni donations, and demonstrating to prospective students that Colby offers less than other NESCAC schools. Rugby at Colby is a great opportunity for students who are not continuing their athletic careers on NCAA teams, but still want to stay engaged as team sport athletes.

I played rugby at Middlebury for three years and it was one of the best decisions that I ever made. The risk of concussion remains a risk in all contact sports and I would encourage Colby to increase education surrouding their medical concerns prior to simply slashing a program that is so meaningful to players, coaches, and community members throughout the new england area. I am a former lacrosse and soccer player as well and I find it entirely unfair to single rugby out without a more transparent discussion.

Being a junior on a college rugby team I can tell you there is much more to it than the hitting and violence. It is about brotherhood, teamwork, and hard work. Modern equipment like the latest in scrum caps and proper form fitting mouth guards are great for boosting the safety. It would be sad to see this program go because of financial support. for 12 years, I was the trainer for the University of Massachusetts Rugby Football Club (UMRFC) and annually privide coverage for some of their off-season events. The sport may look more dangerous to those who do not have the experience, but it generally is not as injury causing, as most people think. I want to stress, that I was a VOLUNTEER trainer, with the emergency medical background to be able to assess and treat injuries. I believe that any collage who has a trained EMT, with some injury prevention training added can fulfill this role and that you need not have the grossly inflated costs of a paid trainer. This sport is one that provides crucial training in a healthy sport, which also provides very good training in critical thinking, which is important for all college students and graduates. I urge you to keep the program alive and to explore alternatives which would allow for such a successful program to continue.
