Several of men in this community, including myself, went door to door over 50 years ago getting petitions signed to open Coker Creek school. We made it happen then and we will not just sit back and let them take it away from us now. We need to fight for what is right and that is our kids and their educations. Our kids are as deserving as any other kids in Monroe County.

Looks to me if it were all about money they could cut some Central Office weight from the rolls. Those positions don't contact children and surely don't impact the education level as much as a local elementary school does. This school has always been a star school and part of their success has been the size. Other schools in Georgia for example don't have classes on Mondays but go longer days Tuesday-Friday. This would save money on support, lunches, buses etc while maintaining a footprint in the community. Kids are not going to benefit from the extraordinarily long bus rides to Tellico up and down the mountain every day. It could very well be a safety issue with the remote nature of the area and lack of lights on roads and early morning pick up by buses. I would be furious if I was a parent. Keep it open.
