Dear Sir, This petition concerns the construction of a new academic block and girl's hostel on NLSIU Campus. The students have been informed through unofficial sources that this is to provide for the increased intake of students from the next academic year and also to utilize the funds granted by UGC for construction purposes within March, which is the deadline set by them. The students and other stakeholders, including alumni, are appreciative of the reasons which necessitate this construction and are also mindful of the fact that it falls within administration’s jurisdiction to take calls on such a matter, but all the stakeholders are concerned about the location of these new buildings and hence this petition addressed to your esteemed authority. With respect to the proposed new girl’s hostel, it is being built at the cost of tens of trees which adorned the entire area. Sir, we wish to know if the administration has made arrangements to replace the lost greenery elsewhere on campus. If yes, we request you to kindly let us know the earmarked spaces for the same. With respect to the new academic block set to be built in front of the library, we wish to register two pronged objections. The library has been designed such that it receives natural lighting throughout the day and this infact is considered to be its best feature. By constructing a building right in front of it would prevent any light from entering the library thus taking away from the architectural advantage it currently has. Further, the lit library at night is a sight to behold and is a picture that outsiders identify NLS with. By covering up most of the library with a building in front of it would destroy this monumental impression that the library in its current form creates. Due to the above reasons, and also due to the deep sentiments that the student body attaches to preserve the beauty of the campus as it is now, we request you to stall the construction until the college reopens so that a suitable area for going ahead with both the buildings can be selected in consultation with the faculty and the student body of NLS. If the deadline of March is to be strictly adhered to, then we ardently request you to make suitable arrangements to accomodate our requests as outlined above.
