Personally, I was surprised when I heard the Union Street Tea Lounge had been struggling. When I’m there, people are buying things constantly, and they have the longest lines I’ve ever seen at a coffee shop-type place. This, combined with how the owner did nothing to discourage the behavior he now attributes the establishment’s failure to (people staying too long without buying enough), leads me to question just how responsible this man really was. In my mind it seems that the new owners could not repeat the old owner’s mistakes: they are stepping up to the plate out of the precise sense of responsibility that the old owner failed to demonstrate. But the ultimate failure of the Union Street Tea Lounge is not just showing us what mistakes were made and how we might correct them; it is also revealing how much Brooklyn values authentic communal spaces and cultural hubs, and leaving the door open for these qualities to be developed even more in a new and improved space. I, for one, sincerely hope that the people of Brooklyn get a chance to take advantage of this. It can be easy to forget, especially in New York City… but community is a need. And it needs space to grow.

I, like many others, am saddened that the Park Slope staple Tea Lounge is closing due to the owner's desire to no longer carry on business. I met Steven and Shaya here, along with many other friends over the years, and I know that they would successfully carry out the vibe and community that make this place so unique and special.

I worked here. And I was a customer here. What an amazing space and community. Mr. Dixon, Mr. Stromer is an intelligent man and he has a business mind. Please look over his petition and the community will benefit from the company. with much community hope. - David

This space is perhaps the greatest cafe in the USA. I have never found anything like it in my travels. Please allow it to move into the next incarnation
