Save Beaumont Alameda Pre-K

Both of my children went through the pre-k program and they were so well prepared for kindergarten!

PPS has committed to housing Beaumont Alameda Pre-K for the 2018-2019 school year. We sincerely hope that commitment will not be broken without exhausting every possibility.

There is not enough pre Ks in the area... let’s do this!

This program has benefitted families for 30 years.

This is a quality program that has served our community well. It is unfair to displace them with such late notice - leaving their business and so many families in jeopardy. I hope that PPS will work to find a place for their program to continue serving our neighborhood families!

My son attended Beaumont Pre-k last year and he loved it! I was so happy to find a place that would help with the transition into Alameda Elementary in regards to the hours he would be in school, the daily structure, learning, discipline, and socialization. My son loved his time at Beaumont Pre-k and I felt safe having him there because I knew how protective Mir was with the children and his staff. Mir’s program is invaluable to our NE community.

IED at Beaumont Middle school set my children up for success in school. It is well run, made accessible to many in our community who otherwise could not access a pre-K program, and is exactly what NE Portland needs more of. Keep IED going for our children - it’s the right thing to do.

IED has served the community for 30 years. It is an amazing program that has been incredibly effective at preparing kids for kindergarten. There are literally hundreds of alumni families in the northeast that could attest to the high quality and value of the program, and dozens of kindergarten teachers who could attest to the great benefit in their classrooms of having kids who have attended IED Pre-K. In fact, at Sabin, I understand that they typically disperse the incoming IED kids evenly among the classrooms to help lift each classroom's functioning. The district should be SUPPORTING, not effectively DESTROYING a program that serves such a valuable function in the district's overall mission of "every student, every teacher, every school succeeding". In my mind, the district should be looking to facilitate expansion of such a program into ALL of the NE neighborhood schools that have capacity for it. Although IED is a private program, it essentially serves a public function, much the same way private aftercare programs support the functioning of our public schools. IED is run as a non-profit, and its fees are far below what other private preschools in the area charge. In addition, it offers a great deal of financial aid to families in need. Unfortunately, at this point in time, publicly funded Pre-K is not offered. A program like IED is the next best thing. The district made a commitment to the program that it could operate in the 2018-19 school year that it is now breaking. For many families, this is their first experience with PPS. It is deeply concerning that their first impression of PPS is one of untrustworthiness, betrayal, and dismissal of their needs. Preschool spaces in Portland are not easy to obtain, and it is too late in the application process at most schools to secure a space for next year.
