As a music educator in north Jersey it’s incredibly concerning to hear about potential cuts to the arts in the town that I live in. The arts are a great outlet and opportunity for kits to connect, find community and learn to express themselves while working toward a common goal. Please do not cut this program for our kids!

Invest where it matter and benefits the young community to stay in place for future growth of this city, the less support to give them, the more likely this city will shift in a faster phase into under developed communities, which there are plenty examples with some of the proximate towns.

My son began his band career in the Hawthorne elementary schools. He's a graduating senior, has written two musical scores that the Hawthorne high School band has played at their spring concert and is attending William Patterson for music production on a nearly full ride scholarship because of his proficiency in music. This is not something that should be cut.

Music has played not just an important roll in both mine and my wife’s lives, but most importantly it has been an integral part for our daughter’s life and education. She has attended school in Hawthorne from kindergarten until this year as an 8th grader. To stress this further, had we as a young family found that this school system did not provide a music program, we would have not chosen to live here. The music program and teachers have played an indelible role in our daughters life which will positively affect the rest of her academic career and life.

Arts programs are not extras — they are essential. Art, band, and chorus help students build creativity, confidence, discipline, teamwork, and emotional expression. For many children, these classes are where they feel most connected, successful, and inspired to come to school. Cutting the arts may save money short term, but it takes away opportunities that help students grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

Music is more than art. It's math. It's comprehension. It's fine motor skills. It's cooperation. It is vital to young, growing minds.

Now more than ever, kids need the humanities and tactile artistic expression in education.
