Baker hall was built in 1879 and has a rich history in the town of Ashford, Connecticut. Before the current town hall was erected in the 1920s, Baker Hall served as such, along with many other positions throughout the years. It was a dance hall, a meeting house, a jewelry store, an antiques store, and as of late, a residential house. The building is in good to excellent condition demanding little to no restoration whatsoever. Many historic names in Ashford have attached themselves to the building. The Cushman and the Whitehouse family both have ties to this building as well as the Bakers, who still reside in Ashford and whom the building is named for. A mill owner and Union Civil War veteran named Danforth Lombard lived here as well, writing of his accounts at Gettysburg.

It was recently sold to Cumberland Farms, who has every intention on knowing all of this history into its basement in the name of expanding it's small store located next to Baker Hall, to make a giant superstore. In doing this, they are not only robbing our town of beauty, but of history. This building holds an intangible amount of history that is deeply rooted in Ashford, and demolishing it would be a big mistake. Ashford is not a very big town, and a giant Cumberland Farms store is not how we want to represent it. Please don;'t let our town and future fall victim to corporate bullying.
