I was a student in Mrs.Hazen's class for ASL 1 & 2, and also had the privilege of being a student aid in one of her ASL 3 classes. I learned so much from this woman, much more than a language or about another culture, but about the kind of person I wanted to be after my high school cater

I was lucky enough to have the incredible privilege of being one of Trisha Hazen's students for three of my four years at Hanford West High School. I cannot fathom a single reason why Mrs.Hazen should not be allowed to continue to teach and inspire her students. I know that I speak for many of her students when I say that Mrs. Hazen is undoubtably one of the most knowledgable, passionate, and compassionate teachers at HWHS. Yes, she did often have sick days, but never once did her health negativity affect my or my peers education. We always took our tests, did or performances, most importantly learned every day. Mrs. Hazen has a remarkable passion for her career, ASL, and Deaf culture that is evident everyday in her classroom. But the reasons she should continue teaching go beyond her knowledge of ASL and into her compassion for her students. She often said that we were her children, and she truly did care for each of us in that manner. Taking away Mrs. Hazen from her class and her students would be a harsh injustice to all four rent and future students of HWHS.

I graduated from Hanford High School in 2011. I was granted the opportunity to take American Sign Language with Mrs. Hazen at Hanford West during my senior year. From that one year experience, I grew passionate and inspired by not only American Sign Language, but the entire Deaf culture and history. I was excited to learn about the vast Deaf population that we have right here in the Central Valley. During my senior year of High School, I was a part of a program called Youth and Government. This is a mock government program where high school students are able to learn about government and the way it works through mock trials, mock senate, mock assembly, etc. Each student was able to play the role of a mock Senator, Lobbyist, Judge, etc. As a mock senator of this program, I was able to stand in the Senate Chambers in Sacramento California and speak to over 100 of my peers. I was able to speak about American Sign Language, why it was a foreign language, why it is important in our schools, why the Deaf culture is important, and why we should fight for it all. This gave this speech during the presentation of a mock bill that would not acknowledge American Sign Language as a foreign language under California law. I was able to recite the five parameters of Sign Language and explain basic syntax and grammatical structure of the language. I stood up and spoke with tears in my eyes and passionate in my heart. There were people in the audience signing to me, thanking me for standing up for the Deaf community. Afterwards, people walked up to me, expressed that they were moved by my speech and thanked me for speaking up and being a voice for the Deaf community. Needless to say, the mock bill was killed. It was that moment that I realized how incredibly passionate I was about this language and this culture, and at the end of the day I owed all of that passion to Mrs. Hazen. Immediately upon entering school at College of the Sequoias, I was attending Deaf events, excelling in

Mrs Hazen was the only teacher who gave a damn while I was there. she was patient and built a love for the deaf community that I use everyday in my work with Veterans. give all students this oppertunity to have a beautiful outlook on life.

Mrs Hazen is an awesome American Sign Language teacher! She covers the culture, grammar, and signs in depth. Please help us keep her teaching ASL at Hanford West.

I've been lucky to have been taught ASL by Mrs. Hazen and to use it on several occasions after graduating high school. Allowing high schools to be exposed to ASL can help them to be patient with others and also be helpful to the deaf community if need be. Limiting ASL to one high school only allows a small population of students to be exposed to ASL. I hope they reconsider letting go of a wonderful teacher who is passionate about sign language and capable of teaching students whom she too cares about.
