Save Amicks Ferry Road
Whereas, we, the undersigned, support education in Lexington-Richland District 5 (District 5) and schools that are safe for children, and;
Whereas the district has already purchased 47.37 acres on Mt. Vernon church road for $590,800 in 2010-2011 for new schools from referendum bond money; (Richland county tax map)
Whereas, we believe, our tax dollars have already been used to build the present schools with the ability for expansion to accommodate growth;
Whereas, District 5 is pursuing purchasing land without public approval through a Bond Referendum, for an additional elementary school site on Amicks Ferry Road ( The district has NOT DONE a traffic study with SCDOT, No enrollment study, No study on how to use existing schools, which were built for expansion, NO classroom utilization study to accommodate growth)
Whereas, 9400 cars per day travel on Amicks Ferry Rd, daily, and school traffic and would exponentially increase traffic, cause traffic delays and put children and citizens in danger; (SCDOT traffic count 2016)
Whereas, landowners along Amicks Ferry will likely lose front yards, and land to widen the road to accommodate traffic;
Whereas, the U.S protected wetlands immediately behind the proposed school will be in danger of being destroyed, and;
Whereas, upon construction of the new school, quality of life of residents living on and around the Amicks Ferry Rd. area will be adversely effected.
Therefore, we, the undersigned firmly believe that Amicks Ferry Rd. is a very poor location for a new school.
