We, the undersigned, urge the South African government, business leaders, and all stakeholders to work together towards a sustainable solution that:
- Preserves Jobs and Supports Families – We request that all retrenchments at ArcelorMittal Steel South Africa be put on hold while negotiations take place to acquire the steel plant.
- Sustains Economic Stability – Keeping Mittal Steel operational is essential to preventing economic decline in the Vaal and surrounding areas.
- Empowers Local Communities – The economy should benefit the people by fostering sustainable opportunities for local businesses and workers.
- Promotes Quality Employment – Ensuring fair wages and decent working conditions will uplift workers and improve living standards.
- Encourages Local Participation and Growth – Prioritizing local ownership and industrial expansion will strengthen economic opportunities for communities.
Additionally, we kindly request an urgent meeting with Mr. Kobus Verster to discuss a proposal for the future of the steel plant. We also ask for a tour of the facility to better understand its operations and potential.
We look forward to a prompt response and a shared commitment to safeguarding jobs, strengthening the economy, and building a prosperous future for all.
