As high school graduates from 2020, these students should be afforded every opportunity at their graduation.

Performing in front of my family was an important and memorable part of my Commencement/senior week experience. What a sham it would be to deprive the current a cappella groups of this chance!

This is an important tradition to maintain, especially for so many of these kids who had their end of high school/early college years so seriously impacted by COVID. Keep it going!

These concerts serve three purposes say goodbye to seniors, rare opportunity for them to perform for family and entertain seniors, family and alumni. This would be a loss for all

This is ridiculous- stop robbing my child of experiences at Brown!

This is so disappointing. Please allow this tradition to continue! The seniors deserve to be recognized in this way— especially after all that they went through with covid protocol during their first two years.

Senior week a cappella is an ESSENTIAL tradition at Brown University and must continue. It is the strongest memory I have of Brown and the only reason I would return for reunions.

As a former member of the Brown A Cappella community, I am appalled by this decision. I looked forward to senior week and commencement weekend every year during my time at Brown and bonded not only with my peers in my group, but in the larger a cappella community, the larger student community who would stay to prep for their respective commencement activities, as well as the students who were hard at work prepping for the alumni to return. My own senior year, I was able to present to my family, friends, and community the hard work my sisters and I built. My family, who could not afford to fly to ever see me in concert other than at that time. In addition, the immense value of connecting with generations past of my a cappella group was incredible and immeasurable. You all call on alums EVERY YEAR without fail to ask for our donations and to stay connected to the university but are robbing us and future alums of reasons to stay connected by taking away the very bridges to our experiences. Not every student can afford to participate in greek life, and not every student has the pedigree to be invited to the private elite spaces, some of us join groups based on our talent and ability. I highly doubt that money is a problem, given all of the emails I receive about all of successful fundraising the university has done (not to mention the performing arts center opening right across from the old one, two in 12 years?), and equity is a fine excuse to use at this time. If you truly cared about equity, you’d attempt to expand this experience to more students vs punishing those that have benefitted from it and taking it away. I’m very disappointed in you all, especially lately. —Chantel Whittle ‘12

I have been looking forward to my senior concert and senior week for years, and given the disturbances to a typical college experience that the class of 2024 has dealt with, it feels like the least that can be done to preserve this important tradition for us.

This is one of the most important and sacred traditions available to students of Brown University. This must not be taken from us after decades of history that have continued to bring our Brown community together. I stand with the Inter Galactic Community of A Cappella at Brown University.
