I grew up at 299 Chestnut, and am now back with my wife and 2 year old daughter. All of us vehemently oppose demolition of this property. As the oldest house on the street it's a piece of history, and in the right hands it could absolutely be properly restored. Replacing it with anything else would be a tragedy.

I'd rather save the building and see it turned into two luxury units than see the lot developed with 3-6 luxury units (and MAYBE one affordable).

This home was (built in 1841) and one of the few historical homes left in Jp. Please save this home!!!! Don't knock it down to build yet another condo canyon to add to the condo nation invading Jp. Thank you!

This is a beautiful home from the period of American design that incorporated the best of the classical tradition into the New England experience. The survival of the gorgeously proportioned columns is testament to durability of the white pine and richly designed homes that could be built in America for even the middle class. I’ve watched the decline for years-once a similarly proportioned barn carriage house stood alongside until it was condemned or collapsed. I’ve spoken to people who worked on the house, more in a labor of love, because the owner never had the funds to maintain the property. At least he didn’t try to chop the building into run down housing.
Historic Boston has restored similar properties by repurposing them as living units or making them active use for the community. The lot is small so it’s unlikely that it could be used for a farm like the Fowler Clark Epstein Farm, https://historicboston.org/portfolio_page/fowler-clark-epstein-farm/. But Historic Boston has several examples of converting similar sized buildings to housing units. This house probably once commanded a view over the Stonybrook Valley. Or it may have been moved when the surrounding dense housing was built.
A builder would almost certainly want to ask for variances to put in denser housing. The building is already shadowed by the multi family properties on Green St. Yet there aren’t more than a half dozen buildings in JP of this age and quality. The community can fight the demolition by this petition but also by following up with the BPDA and ZBA and not allow a change of zoning. It’s currently in a 3 family-5000 district. It’s zoned for 2 family on a lot under 10,000 sf and would need a variance to exceed that. The tax record shows that it had a 4-6 family description in 1988. A developer might push for that too.

lived in the neighborhood for years and watched this building. I know there is someone who will respect its character and heritage. Please do not let some developer with out a history of doing right by historic buildings acquire it and destroy it. These old buildings are what brought me to J.P. 37 years ago.

Let's preserve the historic characteristics of the neighborhoods in Boston and not fill JP with cheap looking condos that cost a fortune and DO NOT PROVIDE AFFORDABLE HOUSING, anyway. The city needs to step up its game and stop pandering to developers.
