Dear SAT Customer Service,
I am writing to notify you about a severe issue within CollegeBoard's management system for SAT cancellations. First off, I want to acknowledge how difficult running a standardized test during a pandemic must be. However, within my community, I have noticed that countless students are only receiving notices of their test center closing a few days before the actual exam. This was also a common experience for me. If this last-minute message relay was caused by slow reports from schools to the CollegeBoard, that would be understandable, but this is not the case. To verify the testing conditions of such an important exam, my friends and I contacted multiple schools, only to find out that the various test centers were closed, and each school had ALREADY contacted the CollegeBoard. However, even now, less than two weeks before the September SAT test date, the "SAT Test Center Closing" webpage still hasn't been updated with the correct information, and none of us have received notification emails of test center closures yet. In other words, CollegeBoard's communication to students on test center closures is currently unacceptably slow.
I cannot stress how important this issue is to us students. While most colleges no longer require an SAT score, to stand out in the competitive application process of top schools, an SAT score is still extremely desirable. Many of us spend YEARS studying and preparing for this test, and our stress levels a few weeks before the exam are at a peak. Imagine how the millions of students you serve would feel if something they worked so hard on was canceled a few days prior to its planned date. Imagine how they would feel if all of their anxiety was for nothing. On top of that, this late notification also makes it difficult for us to plan ahead, as by the time we realize our center is closed the late registration date is past and we aren't able to switch test centers. For the unlucky students, this would mean no SAT scores to send before the college application deadline, a major setback to entering an institution they love, and consequently their opportunities in future careers.
By simply tweaking your system and notifying students of test center closures immediately after a school reports it, you would be saving countless students the stress of "exam-week cancellations." I sincerely hope you can take this message to heart and make systematic change for your students' future.
Thank you,
-Rachel Hu
