Albuquerque's annual Balloon Fiesta is less than a month away, and pilots are now finding out that they'll have less ground to work with when it comes to landing during the event.
On Saturday, Balloon Fiesta officials told Action 7 News that the Sandia Pueblo is not allowing pilots to land within its reservation boundaries this year.
In the past, officials with the pueblo have allowed pilots to land on the reservation due to the fact that pilots have to land wherever the wind takes them, and because the reservation is right next to Balloon Fiesta Park.
The decision will take away an estimated 40 square miles of landing space for pilots. The pueblo has also put height restrictions into place, according to the pilots.
Balloon Fiesta officials told Action 7 News that the pueblo leaders gave them no explanation as to why they made this decision. Sign to support the Fiesta and boycott Sandia Pueblo and all of their business ventures until thy are more reasonable.

Reaching this level of support has been draining but it proves people realize how much is at stake for the pilots. I am exhausted by the silence from the leadership but this momentum keeps me moving forward.

With Balloon Fiesta less than 3 weeks away, the Sandia Pueblo's sudden and unexplained ban on balloon landings is really unfortunate. Balloon pilots normally avoid Pueblo lands anyway, but what if there's an emergency?
We have out of state guests that come for the balloon fiesta every year. We go to the casino and buffet multiple times during that period. That won't be happening this year unless the ban is lifted. I will never go to the casino again if they do this.
They should be admonished for their poor decision. We will not support them and can take our business and $$ elsewhere !
Let's boycott sandia casinos, money talks.
Please reconsider letting them land there
I will not visit Sandia Casino, nor will I purchase gasoline at their stations if this insanity continues. Also I will not visit the "tent" which I see will be on the pueblo land this year.
The Fiesta is economically important to the entire area, including Sandia Pueblo to not resolve this issue. COME ON, Sandia Pueblo, work out these issues NOW!

Since hot air balloons have been allowed to land on pueblo property in the past, and the pueblo - whether directly or indirectly- receives significant financial benefit from the annual Balloon Fiesta (which has a multi million dollar financial impact on the city and state), I would respectfully ask the public to reconsider their decision. Please be a cooperating, collaborative partner!
