I believe the new reservation system implemented for the San Juan Islands route favors the tourist. Those of us who live out here full time have been left with few choices on how to travel to and from our home.
The islands are not a destination vacation for us and they are not a destination wedding site. This is our home. We have paid taxes to the highway system for many years and just like the folks heading home to Seattle (or somewhere), we should be able to use the highway system to travel home. People heading to Seattle are never told that there is no more room on the rods for them, so they cannot return home that day. As local residents of the islands, we should have been given priority. I have lived here 32 years and I am disappointed that the ferry system has ignored us in favor of the tourist.

Hi Leah, maybe if you are completely happy with the system, signing a petition to change it is not for you. I think we are all optimistic, but the glitches that have already appeared are troubling. I'm not interested in starting a back and forth conversation about this on this Petition site, but wanted to point this out just the same. Thanks.

Prior to reservations was no picnic but this new system is majorly flawed. ridiculous to penalize someone for circumstances out of their control of a Doc appt runs over or traffic delays. If you're bumped to standby on the late boat and can't get on you're stuck for the night. Getting home is impairitave to most individuals as there are families waiting for them. No flexibility.

I'm concerned that the locals are being trapped on the island during tourist season. We are missing important meetings and/or doctors appointments because of the high volume of tourist reservations. This is our highway system and we should have priority over tourists.

This reservation system is not fair to the people who live in the Islands. I am in no hurry to go back, this system just looks like a nightmare waiting for me after a long day's drive.

I like the reservation system and it is working for me. I like knowing I will be able to get on a certain ferry. Given time the problems will work themselves out.

The reservation system does not work if you are an islander. I had my hot water heater go out, so I needed to go to the main land with little notice. Was frustrated because I could not get everything done on the mainland with out missing my reservation, being charged and possible no way to get home that day. (it was a Friday)

We can't even make a doctor's appointment in the summer because we can't count on being able to get a reservation on the ferry. People are making all kinds of reservations for summer whether they need them or not.

I feel the number one issue is the lane down to the terminal is a guaranteed issue. A single lane down backs up the hill MANY times in holiday and summer traffic... sorry but the infrastructure is not there. If I have a reservation but cant get down the hill in time, many will dodge around and that means using on coming traffic lane to get down there and then the issue will become a shouting match and anger point for ALL parties. Sorry. Not a fan at all of this new system. Period. I am caged in now. Can't just wake up and have an impulse to take my family on an outing to the mainland to see friends and family... those days are gone... miserably.

I've already had problems getting a reservation with a weeks notice of leaving don't even want to think how hard it will be in the summer.
