I am a relatively new resident of the Salish Sea, but being here even a short time I have seen what a special place it is. This a place where culture, both native and otherwise abounds, where innovative and collaborative solutions are being developed for complex environmental challenges, where there are incomparable natural resources, and where unique linkages between land and sea exist. As a marine biology student, I've learned that climate change will threaten our natural places, and we need to take preemptive action to protect unique ecosystems like the Salish Sea while we can. For these reasons, among many others, I support the designation of the Salish Sea as a World Heritage Site.

Without protection in place, we cannot ensure a healthy coast in the future. We have already seen a recovery in Howe Sound after years of industrial abuse. No one wants to return to that age.

The Salish Sea is a unique ocean area that contains an enormous degree of biodiversity and is a crucial part of the life of the First Nations of BC and the all the adjoining BC communities. It contains unusual glass sponge reefs, an endangered orca population, a marine highway for different species of whales, and many marine mammals and fish. The preservation and conservation of this marine area is crucial to the health of our ocean area. Please support the recognition of the Salish Sea as a World Heritage Site.

I recently moved from Edmonton to Cowichan Bay, partly to be near this wonderful sea resource. It is critical that we protect its natural beauty, historic and cultural significance, and vital ecosystems for today and for future generations. Protection is cheap compared to the cost of losing its integrity forever. It must be protected now.
