Until this Year, SAIT Polytechnic has offered a 2 year diploma program in Geomatics that specializes in Mapping. This program shares 83% course content with the Geomatics diploma in Surveying. Both programs share a common first semester and in November of the first year, students choose their specialization either Survey or Mapping. The bulk of the commonality stems from this shared semester as well as the core required courses that all students attending SAIT are required to participate in IE. Calculus, Physics, Tech Comm 1 and 2, Computer Fundamentals etc. The remaining 17% is very distinct and specialized to each discipline. For the Mapping option this includes, but is not limited, to Soft-copy Photogrametry, Microstation, Digital Cartography, Map Projections and Geodesy. This year, it was decided to dissolve the Mapping option and offer only surveying. Many of the students were caught off guard by this decision, particularly students entering their first year having already chosen Mapping as their preferred career path. This petition is aimed to gain industry and student support to see the Mapping option reinstated. It is imperative that this support be shown to the SAIT administration before November so that the students can choose their designation with enough time to resurrect the curriculum. Please sign this before Friday, October 30th at 12:00 noon. Please include if you are an industry professional or student. Industry, please include your title and company in the comments field. Students, please include you SAIT Student ID #. Entries in the comments field are not public and will only be used to verify student/industry participation.
