Sage Creek Hydro Corridor Expansion
The Sage Creek Residents' Association (SCRA), working on behalf of the community of Sage Creek, is asking that all future overland lines in the Sage Creek Hydro corridor be buried for the health and well-being of the residents of Sage Creek. Failing that, the SCRA would propose that an alternative route bypassing Sage Creek be utilized.
Many residents were surprised and concerned to hear that Manitoba Hydro plans to erect an additional two sets of 230-kilovolt (kV) lines and possibly a third, bringing the total to four sets of lines running through Sage Creek. These towers would be as close as 15 meters (49 feet) from the backyards of those backing onto the corridor and would have a height of up to 27 meters (89 feet). The residentshave expressed health and safety concerns with overland lines and have found no shortage of literature to support their concerns. Health concerns should trump operational decisions regarding costs.
The residents of Sage Creek are signing this petition to voice their concerns and indicate their support for all future lines to be buried in the corridor that runs through the community of Sage Creek. If burying is not an option, the SCRA would propose an alternative route be found, bypassing the Sage Creek altogether. The Hydro corridor in Sage Creek has been beautifully landscaped to encourage a healthy lifestyle. This was a key selling feature for many residents moving into the area and it represents a significant portion of the green space within Sage Creek. Costs can be minimized by burying the lines now, instead of taking that project on at a future date. The SCRA believes that the goals of Manitoba Hydro can be met while maintaining the health of the residents and integrity of the established green space by burying the lines or by finding an alternative route (bypassing the community) if burying the lines is not possible.
