THEY NEED TO STOP THIS. Way too much stress on these poor animals and the kids are the ones paying for the committees mistakes.

We just want a fair chance to pick an animal that isnt dangerous. Its not asking for much.

My grandson got hurt bad last year trying to handle a steer that was way too wild. This lottery system is a disaster waiting to happen.

As a 4H alumni, I agree the current system needs changed. The luck of draw takes away the opportunity for the kids to learn how to choose their project animals. It is also unfair if you get a bad draw and end up with a physically or mentally unsound animal. The kids should at least get to choose from a lot of animals.

There must be a better system allowing the 4H'ers to choose their steers for fair. I never heard that there was a lottery system until just now reading this article on FB. Back in my 4H days, the 4H'ers were allowed to choose their animals from whomever they chose. 4H is supposed to be teaching about life just as much as about whatever project you are entering at fair. Life isnt equal for everyone and we all have obstacles to overcome. Learning how to overcome the fact that my family did not have the same kind of money that others did when I was showing horses in 4H helped to make me much stronger and learn how to still compete, and win, against the much more expensive horses and the riders who were always with trainers. I was grand champion english equitation rider 2 years in a row at fair regardless of the fact that my horse was someone elses' reject when I got him 4 years prior to the first win.

My daughter would love to take her feeders as steers the next year! She spends so much time on them and it is unfair that this is not an option. We are too nervous too get a lottery steer after seeing what has happened to other families! Let's make this option available to 4h kids!!!!

Steers make the best profit, it would have been nice to take my feeders as steer projects.

Families should have the opportunity to take either a lottery steer or a feeder to steer project. Not every kid has the help my son was able to get from his father with steer experience. My husband has had to help many families break these crazy steers.
