Mt. Lebanon, PA prides itself on being a "walkable, pedestrian-friendly community" in which students walk to school instead of riding buses and residents of all abilities can safely navigate our streets.
The municipality, however, is also a major pathway for traffic between the South Hills and the City of Pittsburgh. Few residential streets are more impacted by this traffic than North Meadowcroft Avenue, which is used as a cut-thru for commuter traffic, as well as a collector street and major route to school. Due to a lack of continuous sidewalks, portions of the road meet Pennsylvania Code Criteria for Hazardous Student Walking Route because students are not visible by approaching drivers from a minimum distance.
The installation of sidewalks between 629 and 805 North Meadowcroft Avenue, however, would help to address these long-standing hazards for school children and demonstrate that Mt Lebanon prioritizes public safety. Locally obtained records and traffic studies indicate that not only does this roadway carry a high volume of traffic, but also that motorists frequently speed and disregard stop signs. The new sidewalks would help to prevent pedestrian collisions with these motor vehicles that are not as small, slow or infrequent as they once were when this road was built.
The new sidewalks on North Meadowcroft would also diversify our transit options, especially for individuals with disabilities, promote play in children, help to address obesity
and other chronic diseases that stem from inactivity, and reduce traffic congestion, carbon dioxide emissions, and air pollution.
In sum, we are asking you to please help us improve public safety on this roadway, and share in the multiple benefits to our community.

We, the undersigned, support the installation of sidewalks on the odd-numbered, western side of North Meadowcroft Avenue, from 629 to 805, in Mt Lebanon, PA.
