The problem

Drivers are speeding through our neighborhood along the 2400-2500 block of Beryl St as a route around the regular traffic jam at Garnet Avenue and Mission Bay Drive. There is a shortcut that appears in navigation apps from Soledad Mtn Road to Mission Bay Drive via Beryl St, San Joaquin Drive, San Anselmo St, Pacifica Dr, and Bluffside Ave.

Residents along these streets, collectively the Floral Terrace area of Pacific Beach, have had our full fill of irresponsible driving along this shortcut route.

The solution

We reasonably demand responsible traffic management in Pacific Beach along our local community's streets through the placement of speed bumps (as done along the 1900 block of Law St and along Pico St), yield signs (as done at the non-intersection of Via Capri and La Jolla Scenic Dr South in La Jolla, among many other locations in San Diego) and stop signs to force drivers to act more responsibly, and to streamline the Garnet Ave/Mission Bay Dr intersection to reduce the traffic passing along our small community's streets.

Specific problem spots along the route:

  • The dangerous blind crest along Beryl St at the crossing of Randall Street:

The intersection has long been a problem, with dog walkers along the street, cars parked along the road, and drivers racing along Beryl to/from work during the rush hours in the morning or evening, or particularly drivers on the weekend in a hurry to get to or leave Pacific or Mission Beach that pass through the area. Apps routing people unfamiliar with the area have made things much worse in the past year. There have been car accidents, a young lady hit and injured with a broken leg by a speeder through the intersection a few months ago, and numerous near-misses.
