Safer Roads for Highland Village, TX
In Highland Village we have a very active lifestyle. This includes children at play, retirees out for a walk, cyclists, runners, and dog walkers.
Currently the speed limit for all residential streets in our city is 30 mph. It's simply too fast. We discovered that recently when our dog was struck and killed on Lakeside Drive. Thankfully it wasn't one of our children or a friend. But our dog was the 3rd one in 12 consecutive months to be killed in our residential area. That's only the ones we've been told of. Who knows how many more there could be.
Given the topography of our city, the curving nature of many roads, and the population of cars parked along the side, 30 mph is too fast to offer a driver appropriate reaction time. A pedestrian struck at 30 mph is also far more likely to suffer serious fatal injuries than one hit at 25 mph or 20 mph.
After speaking with the City Council and attending a number of meetings, it has become clear that the majority of members on council are not concerned with the overall speed and safety of our residential streets. It's sadly apparent that they won't be moved without more voices from our community. The 300+ from our Facebook post weren't enough! They do have a lot of excuses: it's too hard, it would take so long, the city would have to put up a lot of signs, and it costs money. It's laziness, lies, and inaction. The city has MILLIONS (of our tax dollars) to spend on Pilot Knoll Park, but not on making our streets safer.
Signing this petition is about just that: making our streets safer. There are many ideas for controlling traffic flow, not just speed limit adjustments. Speed bumps, stop signs, etc are all on the table. We're open to them all. By putting your signature here, you are demonstrating a care for our future and your neighbor's safety. Last month is was our dog, but who knows when it will be one of our friends or families? Making a change like this significantly mitigates the risk and is well worth the cost.
So, please, sign with us and help make Highland Village a better place. Send this to your neighbors, your social media networks, your friends, and your families.
