Safe Hiking

During November 2007, we took our dogs for a hike in the Allegheny National Forest in an area that is posted "Foot Travel Welcome". During the hike one of our dogs stepped on a trap that was placed approximately one foot from the dirt road we were walking on. Luckily she wasn\'t hurt, but if it had been our smaller dog, it would of shattered his leg. Currently there is no law in Pennsylvania stating how far from the road a trap must be placed. This trap was large enough that a young child\'s foot would of fit in it. We are trying to get a law passed creating a boundary from roads and hiking trails that would make it safe for everyone. We are not trying to eliminate trapping. We would just like to hike in a public area safely. If you enjoy the outdoors and would like a little addition safety please join us by signing the petition and let Harrisburg know that these are our woods too.
