Our politicians need to correct our current winter weather road maintenance guidelines. With this petition we want to let our mayor and district representatives know that we want safe winter roads in Minnesota's capital city. This means snow plowed in a timely fashion and salting happening in icy weather. If there is a snowfall of 3+ inches that ends before 5 p.m. on a given
day, we want plows out during the overnight hours of that same 24-hour
period (not 30+ hours later as is the current structure). This is a huge safety issue and it is also a financial issue. We pay taxes for services. We need to get to work to pay our taxes. Given the lack of plowing and delayed response to snowy weather, many of us have not made it to our jobs. We get hit twice economically - taxes that aren't providing the service we are due and lost work time. We don't want an increase in taxes, we want our taxes used appropriately and for safety. If you agree, please take part by letting your 'signature be heard'!

Seeing one thousand signatures on this petition is overwhelming because it proves I am not the only person struggling to get to work safely after a storm. This shows the city that residents are united in demanding better use of our tax dollars for essential road maintenance.

Seeing this kind of momentum feels like a weight lifting off my shoulders because I know so many of us are tired of risking our cars and our jobs every time it snows. It is clear the city cannot ignore this much longer when so many neighbors are demanding the bare minimum of safe, plowed streets.

By the time they declare the snow emergency and actually get out there it can be over 24 to 36 hours after the snow ended. The streets end up with 4-6 inches of compacted snow the plows cannot get to creating horrible driving conditions for 4 months!!!!
I am a school bus driver, in the Woodbury/ Cottage Grove area, where both the arterial and neighborhood side streets are plowed, curb to curb, within 24 hours of snowfall. All I can say is thank heaven I do not have to drive a bus in St Paul!
I work outside St Paul and many snowy days I can't get out of my street to go work even when the highways and streets in other area communities are clear. I'very been considering moving out of St Paul for the terrible services provided by the city.
Not everyone owns a 4WD. Yesterday, as I navigated the side streets in second gear, it felt as though I was riding a nearly out-of-control wild bronco... hanging on to the wheel for dear life as I bounced along in nearly out-of-control fashion: NOT safe!
The delays in plowing creates permanent ice that locks seniors and people with disabilities out of community participation for the winter. Isolation is a recognized factor in dementia and other health issues that cost real $ and quality of life.
Downtown streets are TERRIBLE
The roads in Saint Paul are so dangerous! When is the city going to start having parking on one side of the street only? Working on the east side with all of the hills is a nightmare! One would think that areas around schools would be a priority--I have lost count of how many times I couldn 't make it up hills this winter and been late for work. It is pretty sad when the residents have to shovel streets and put down sand!

School buses are having a terrible time navigating the city streets. Imagine that your child has to wait 90 minutes in the cold for his/her bus to get to the stop. That's unacceptable and it's happening! I'm a school secretary and I know it is true.
