These are not our values as Malaysians. We are progressive, modern and at the same time respectful and sensitive towards one another. Datuk Shabudin Yahya's views are not only regressive but does not in any way contribute to the well-being and safety of children.

This proposal is ignorant, regressive, infinitely harmful to women and girls and shows bad faith on the part of this MP. Rape victims are victims of crime, not 'damaged goods' to be gotten rid of and put out of sight. Minors -- both boys and girls! -- are incapable of giving informed consent and unprepared for marriage. Marriage is no solution to social ills. There is no place for such an elected representative in a civilised and compassionate society. Yang Arif, Statutory rape laws exist to protect minors. Minors are protected because they cannot make lifelong decisions requiring maturity - they aren't physically or mentally capable, in most cases, to make a decision (such as marriage, or even getting a pet) that they fully understand. Furthermore, sexual abuse of minors often involve grooming, which further complicates the issue. A minor's "consent" is never an informed one. Minors cannot even legally drive, vote or smoke; why would ANYbody think that just because they have had sex/been raped makes it okay for them to make a decision about marriage? Just to fulfill the ridiculous dogmatic requirements of man-made elements in your religion, you would even go so far as to suggest that statutory rapists should be able to marry their victims? RAPE IS RAPE. Your comments are incredibly harmful, bordering on the ridiculous, and patently ignorant. You are not fit to be a leader, you are not fit to lead a Malaysians with that kind of mentality when you cannot even get the basics of minor protection right.
