While America currently faces a number of challenges abroad as it seeks to combat terrorism and supplant tyrannical regimes in the Middle East, the gravest danger we face is here at home. Currently totaling $14.49 trillion dollars, the national debt of the United States has ballooned out of control as a result of reckless spending in Washington and an over-extended social safety net. Recently the CBO has reported that, if current trends continue, the debt will reach 90% of GDP by 2020. This course is unsustainable. In order to ensure America's future, we must act now.
In order to fix the problem, America's leaders must refrain from airy rhetoric and broken promises. Instead, serious leadership is needed for the serious challenges we face. The trajectory of our safety net programs spells out the urgency of the situation. By 2024 Medicare is set to go bankrupt and by 2036 Social Security is set to follow suit. If we do not get serious about reforming these programs into a lower cost system that meets the needs of our seniors and those less fortunate, we risk losing these programs forever.
In order to save programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security and to ensure the fiscal health of our nation in the years and decades to come, we, the undersigned, believe that reducing America's federal debt should be the country's number one priority in 2012. In order to meet this challenge, everything should be on the table and no stone should be left unturned. Our leadership must reduce spending wherever possible, including defense, and should confront the dilemma of entitlement reform head on.
The time for choosing is now, and we choose a healthy future for America.
