RPI Allow Rush and Recruitment!

Banning rush will be devastating to the community at large. Fraternities and sororities do hundreds of hours of community service every year and raise thousands of dollars for charitable causes.

The Greek community should not be held responsible for RPI's inability to properly sanction responsible individuals. Alpha Phi Class of 2019

As a Greek alumni of RPI, I find it very disturbing that the college administration finds it necessary to take these actions against the greek community, which accounts for a large portion of its student body, and the alumni of which are among the most active and most generous when it comes to donations. The attitude of the RPI administration certainly had its anti-greek sentiment during my 4 years in Troy, but the acceleration in the past decade is clearly intended towards the goal of destroying greek life at RPI forever. The reason for this completely eludes me, as I’m sure it does for many alumni. To ban rush and pledge programs for the upcoming fall semester not only harms the incoming class (and upperclassmen) by removing an option to become involved in an excellent tradition of comradery, community service, and connections that will last a lifetime; it also puts the many greek organizations on campus and their members in serious risk of becoming financially and functionally unstable by eliminating the influx of new members, potentially putting current students’ finances and future at RPI at risk. This is a shameful action being taken by the administration, who should give the matter serious thought and reconsideration, for the good of the historical greek community and the spirit of RPI in general. No fall recruitment would devastate the sororities. Rpi has enough issues attracting female students, removing sororities would be devastating.

RPI '98, Castle brother, former "Greek" Senator. Between what SAJ has done to the Union and what she's now trying to do to the Greeks, I'm beside myself. All she has to do now is eliminate the Materials Science program and the rowing team to wipe out the last vestiges of my RPI experience.

Greek life is virtually the literal life blood of RPI. This will not only damage the greek system, but it will damage the quality of life at the school and the local area surrounding the school. My fraternity (ACACIA) elevated me and made me a better person. To be so short-sighted about the impact that this decision will make is self-destructive.

Greek life had a profound impact on my experience at rpi. I will not support the school going forward if rush isn't reinstated.

Don't punish those who have done nothing wrong. Or say goodbye to your donations i guess.

It gave me the support, opportunity, and confidence to go from a painfully shy girl to become the person I am today: Deputy Director of the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute, working directly for NASA HQ, and speaking at many venues in support of science and underrepresented minorities in science (including an upcoming TED talk). Without my Greek sisters at RPI, 90% of whom I would have never met were it not for Greek life, I definitely would not have been able to transform my life for the better.

Greek life is an important part of many college students life and is very good for the community when practiced responsibly. Shutting it down is not a reasonable decision

Greek life made me the person I am today, it’s imperative that it remains a part of the undergrad experience. Yes, make it safe, but don’t take it away.

Literal garbage

While I understand the reaction to some negative events, it minimizes the positive impact Greek life has. As an AGD sister, I participated in numerous community outreach activities. Furthermore, the friendships that developed at AGD were priceless and were a tremendous support system during the stressful academic education at RPI.

I strongly recommend that you do NOT kill Greek recruitment at RPI. Greek Life is an integral part of student life at RPI. Many alumni are (and always will be) Greek. I will stop donating to RPI and will urge all of my Greek RPI alumni contacts to stop as well, and they will. You need to allow recruitment and you need to support Greek life.

Not all Greek houses are bad!! The majority of Greek life on campus promotes positive values. They take time to help their philanthropies, as well as the community around them. Greek houses create strong, independent leaders over the course of a few years. Dr. Jackson is only concerned about money and making herself look good. However, she and her husband are both Greek alumni. It doesn’t make sense.

Attending and graduating from RPI (1981) was an important milestone BUT not nearly as impactful as being a founding member of the AGD chapter at RPI. The friendships and experiences garnered within the Greek system and life were priceless. Although I understand the concerns associated with misconduct of fraternities/sororities, suspending rush and recruitment will not solve the problem. It will likely result in jeopardizing the overall system. My donations to the RPI fund will cease if RPI proceeds with these drastic actions.

Greek life is a valuable addition to student life and positively effects student experiences while at RPI. To remove Greek life entirely would be unfair to the existing chapters and the incoming students. I might have left RPI after my first year had it not been for my participation in Greek life. Let students choose whether or not they’d like to be a part of Greek life, don’t take that choice from them.

As an alum, looking back I would have transferred freshman year if it wasn't for Greek life. I will never donate to RPI if they do not back off this and will encourage all my friends to do the same.
