I lived close to the Olifantsfontein clay brickworks (Gauteng) and from first hand observation, can report that the process is certainly environmentally hostile:- not only does the coal and/or coke charged brick burning phase, generate CO and CO2 containing smoke but the clay mining phase generates clouds of dust that caused permanent migration of birdlife in the surrounding vicinity. The trees and grass fields are also covered with a thick dust layer. It is required threfore that the services of an experienced competent metallurgical/chemical engineering consultant be obtained in order to determine the effects of carbon emissions and coal/coke reject waste ashes. The feasibility of dust bagging equipment must also be included. The earth moving- transportation- and clay processing equipment also release diesel burnt fumes and noise pollution. The Western Cape in general and the Rooibeg area specifically are water poor and it is a requirement that a competent person signed-off hydrological study be conducted to determine the effect that the brickworks operation will have on the water table as well as the effects of the run-off waste water. From my experienced view, a clay brick works in the earmarked Rooiberg location, will be highly undesireabke as it will have a negative affect on the environment, specifically on the surrouding vinyards and agricultural activities.

We have enough factories as it is. Plant more trees not more factories. We cannot breath paper or clay. We breath oxygen provided by trees. No to more factories in this beautiful area.
