Petition to Fund Radio of Clark University
Radio of Clark University has started the process of returning to the airwaves. The FCC has opened up a rare application window for this summer. These windows are very rare. It is even harder to find available FM Frequencies airspace. ROCU believes that there is an opportunity to get back on the air if we start the process this summer. Student Council has recently allocated ROCU $5,500 for the upcoming year. Previously we had a budget of $3,500. ROCU needs to pay $2,000 just to maintaining a streaming license (though due to technicalities we paid less this academic year). We also need to pay $1,500 to find a FM frequency. This means that ROCU only has $2,00 to operate after fees... This is a decrease in budget! What STUDCO is saying with their budget allocation is that they are in no way interested in financially supporting a Clark Radio Station. The nature of running a radio station is extremely expensive. Technical and DJ equipment is extremely costly and our station is in dire need of improving its equipment. The problem we had this year is that money we spent on equipment greatly hindered our ability to achieve our goals of promoting our station and hosting popular events. Our current budget is nowhere even close to the amount of money required for running a proper radio station. Most college radio stations (and we have communicated with quite a few at schools of similar size) cannot even imagine running a station with our current funding. Having a proper radio station is something that reflects very highly on a college. It bridges the communication between the school and outside community, which is something that Clark is highly devoted to. Our requested increase in budget may seem like a big jump at first glance, but we ask that you consider the value of having a operative radio station at Clark and appreciate that our type of work requires more money than a lot of student groups on campus. The budget we have requested will allow us to host ever-valuable events and programming and will do wonders for increasing Clarkâ
