This petition is to register our objections to the previous temporary and now permanent closure of Great Dover Street/Trinity Road/Falmouth Road Junction. We have been informed by our local Liberal Democrat Councillors that Southwark Council has agreed with TFL to close the road after consultation with residents. We have evidence to prove that a number of residents did raise objections but that these objections were overruled at the community council meetings. Therefore, the Council whose previous decision was to only close Trinity Street has now included Great Dover Street and Falmouth Road Junction. Southwark Council’s decision was made based purely on flawed information and a predetermination to close these roads to satisfy the residents of Trinity Street against the wishes of the Rockingham Estate residents by whatever means necessary without due consideration for residents and businesses on the Rockingham Estate. The closure is being objected to on the following grounds 1) The consultation process did not take into consideration the fact that for most residents on the Rockingham English is not their first/second language and therefore the consultation should have focused on translations into Urdu/Somali and Spanish 2) The initial decision was made in a climate before the introduction of the Congestion Charge which has changed the way vehicles use the roads and the intensity of use between 7am and 6 pm 3) The data that was used to validate the claims for closure was at best inconclusive but at worst without integrity and due regard for the residents of the Rockingham Estate. 4) The decision was taken without any consideration of the delivery of Social Services to the residents of the Rockingham estate including care service deliveries. 5) The decision was taken without due consideration of an impact assessment on the residents of the Rockingham Estate and access by the Emergency Services. (Anecdotal evidence suggests an increase in estimated times of arrival for the Police and the Fire Brigade) 6) There has been limited publicity of the wrongful closure contrary to the Council’s policies on social inclusion. Based on the above points we call on The Mayor of London, Transport for London, Simon Hughes MP, Valerie Shawcross, London Assembly Member for Lambeth and Southwark, Labour Candidate, Liberal Democrats and the Government, to immediately reverse the decision without which will surely affect the residents of the Rockingham Estate. We further implore you to seek judicial review on the decision to close Great Dover Street/Trinity Street/especially Falmouth Road Junction, which is a vital access route for local residents and businesses of entry to the Rockingham Estate.
