Due to budget cuts in the school district, RRISD have taken the bus routes away from the Morning Side Meadows area. By state law, the school district does not have to provide transportation to an area if it is within two miles distance to the attended school. The exception to this law would be that if the roads traveled were deemed unsafe. The decision makers have stated that Red Bud Lane and Gattis School Road are safe for the children to walk and cross, keep in mind that no crossing guard is provided at either crossing point on Red Bud Lane. While Forest Creek Elementary School is closer in distance to Morning Side Meadows than to Ridgeview Middle School, transportation is provided to the elementary school. The decision was made to cut this bus route to Ridgeview, for the children who are merely one year older then last year. Since the opening of the toll road SH45, the traffic has nearly doubled on Red Bud Lane. We have no sidewalks for the children to walk, which leaves them walking on the side of the road. The issue with this is that when cars are trying to turn on a given street in the neighborhood, the cars behind them do not wait but instead go around the turning car, using that area the children are walking in as their passing lane. The cars speed through Red Bud Lane and Gattis School road and Gattis School road has one of the highest number of speeding violations given as any street in Round Rock. These roads are not safe for our children to be walking to and from school. We pay enough School taxes that at the very least we should be able to have safe transportation to and from school for our children. I would hate for another child to be killed on Gattis School road before the decision makers say that we were right. Whether you have children attending Ridgeview presently, in the near future or not at all, if you agree that Red Bud lane and Gattis School road are not safe for young children to be walking please take the time and sign this petition.
