Riverhead Charter School Cares about School Safety

The sixth graders in Mrs. Behrhof and Mr. Wurm's class are writing on behalf of their fellow students at Riverhead Charter School, which is a tuition-free public school of choice for grades K-8. We are located on 3685 Middle Country Road, Calverton Long Island, NY. Ever since our school opened 14 years ago, we have been without a school zone. The speed limit is 50 miles per hour and we have no crosswalk at all. Three years ago, after our only crossing guard was struck by a car moving too fast to stop, fifth and sixth grades took action. They went to the town board and were told that something would change, but nothing did. This year, we want to try again, and this time see results. Many people didn’t even know there was a school here. Many cars go by in such a short amount of time as a result of them going so fast. We would like you to help us get a speed limit of at most 30 miles per hour and a crosswalk. This very dangerous and we don’t want someone else getting hurt, especially staff and students.
