The children born on American soil are American citizens. Their parent(s) often came here through great personal risk to escape unimaginable conditions. The removal of a parent could devastate an entire family unit on both an emotional and financial level. As the granddaughter of undocumented grandparents (W.O.P. was the word used back then), and as someone whose life has been enriched by many cultures, I support the River Forest Welcoming Village Resolution. If you live, work, go to school here, I hope you will too.

Regardless of the wide range of feelings about undocumented immigrants in our community; we should all agree that its best to afford everyone the right to live in our communities without fear of persecution while participating in the daily activities of our society. This in all truth helps make all of our lives better and betters the chances of immigrant assimilation. A Welcoming Village Resolution is the least we should be doing in light of the current political climate and recent policies at the Federal level.

I moved to River Forest to give my family opportunities, not to take away opportunity from others. Plus I admire people who take great risks to come to our country to give their family opportunities. That is American Spirit. They are Americans.

Having a Welcoming Resolution in RF will help vulnerable residents/employees here feel safer in the scary national atmosphere in which we now live. And to assure that neighboring communities are safe as well, we have to join them in declaring RF to be welcoming.

Now if only River Forest were to be welcoming to households with modest incomes, African Americans, people with disabilities, and seniors being forced out due to a lack of housing they can afford. Our zoning -- like Oak Park's -- continues to run afoul of the nation's Fair Housing Act regarding community residences for people with disabilities and the village government continues to refuse to commit to preserving existing affordable housing, much less getting additional affordable housing built. Sad, very bigly sad.
