A Letter of Support for Hotel Workers

Dear Hotel Worker; We are community members who share your dream of making Silicon Valley a better place to live and work. We stand with you and all hotel workers striving for equality and social justice. As hotel workers, you are a vital part of the Silicon Valley economy. Business travelers, tourists, and visitors depend on the services you provide during their stay here. Your work provides our cities with tens of millions of dollars from the transient occupancy tax. This revenue supports numerous cultural institutions that enhance our quality of life, from the Center for the Performing Arts to Christmas in the Park to the Jazz Festival. Because of how much you contribute to our lives, your campaign to ensure that hotel jobs provide a decent standard of living is important to us all. You deserve to be able to meet your basic needs without relying upon public services, and to provide food and shelter for your families with one job instead of two or three. You deserve to have time and energy to give to your neighborhoods, schools, places of worship, and loved ones, instead of living and working in pain and exhaustion. Those of you standing up for your rights in non-union workplaces face an especially difficult challenge. We believe workers have the right to a fair process to choose a union, but many employers will use mandatory meetings, misinformation, interrogation, and threats to prevent workers from exercising that right. In your efforts to achieve fair wages, humane workloads, affordable health care, and dignity for all hotel workers, you are not alone. Your vision of a Silicon Valley where all people are treated with respect is the same vision that inspires us. We will:
