San Francisco, of all places, should take the lead in modeling proactive measures to ensure the dignity, safety,and respect of transgender people at their place of work and in the greater community.

Remeke is one of the most thoughtful and intelligent men I have had the privilege of knowing. What he has endured from the City and County of San Francisco seems unbelievable in an environment we all assume to be a bastion of enlightenment, but it is all too real. The fact that his coworkers and supervisors have gone unchecked in their rampant transphobia brings shame to the City. I suspect an undercurrent of racism and classism reinforces his ill treatment. Regardless of the cause, the City needs to take responsibility for making sure ALL its employees are treated with full dignity and respect.

As the Chief Executive of the company I work for said to me "It's no use having a good written policy unless you make it work". If San Francisco wants the world to believe they are committed to equality, they need to start making that commitment work.
