Would you like access to a university-grade observatory in Richards Lake? A member of the Architectural Review Committee has rejected a request to build a privately funded observatory in my back yard. It will be smaller than 10x10 and under the 8 ft height required for a city permit. Thousands of dollars in equipment is already purchased and ready to install, including a 16 inch reflector telescope. The Architectural Review Committee is still dragging their feet on this project despite the equipment sitting in my garage waiting to be used. I am currently gathering all the documentation needed for the formal appeal so they cannot ignore the fact that the structure meets every city requirement.

Seeing this level of support for the observatory has been overwhelming because this project was just a dream for our backyard until this week. It is incredibly heartening to know that so many of you want to see the wonders of the night sky right here in our neighborhood.

I see no reason why this observatory would not be an attractive and exciting addition to your neighborhood. What a great way to bring your neighbors together! The HOA is overstepping its bounds here... enforcing rules to keep the neighborhood attractive and stifling a unique, unobtrusive use of a family's private property are two very different things.
Tom Pickles is a responsible member of the community. He is a fireman and a veteran. He wants to pursue his interest by building an observatory that will follow the requirements for a city permit. It will be no different from having a gazebo in the backyard-10 X 10 X 8!
What a great learning opportunity for the neighborhood! Tom is very educated in astronomy and has taught our boys so much about space. His enthusiastic personality is contagious and makes everyone around him excited to learn more!
I lived Richard's Lake for 5 years and saw many delapated back yard structures and some of the ugliest home colors. How can they possibly oppose this? It is like you live in Boulder.
Anyone this committed to stargazing and willing to share a love like this, should be commended. It sounds like all requirements according to city code are being met. Thank you.

I am all for this. It's smaller than a shed, backyard playground or even a trampoline. If people can have those and things like chicken coops, I don't see what the problem is. A reflector telescope is only good for looking at objects in space (I own one) so there's no need to worry about privacy issues. Great idea, 100% support.
