The most important focus of the children at Dunbar is education and overcoming adversity. During the season last year the team was presented with a few hurdles but the situation did not deter their goals and faith. They believed and continue to believe in each other. Darren Powell is one of the most influential members on the Dunbar family. Not only does he stand up and fight for these children he is helping to mold and shape young adults to fully functional adults that will soon transition to society. With that being said Darren job does NOT stop on the field. He supports the Dunbar family off the field as well. From him picking up children to feeding children to letting the children call him just to talk. Leaders are born and not made. Leaders must have the natural ability to lead and navigate the challenges of every obstacle. Darrren was born to lead. He's was born to set an example for the children not only at Dunbar but throughout the community. I'm very displeased about the decision the board had made to take Darren out of his leadership role. I must say my son never attended a public school setting until this year. He's always played sports at Dunbar but never attended a public school setting. This year I made the decision to transition him to a public school. I did not take this decision lightly because we are speaking of my child's future. I must say I wavered back and forth with my decision and still was not fully convinced that Dunbar was the right choice let alone ANY Dayton public school. I must share that if it was not for MR. DARREN POWELL my child would not be attending Dunbar. Darren took the time to set up meetings with the school counselor, the principal, gave me a tour of the school and most importantly outlined what Dunbar could offer. All though my son does play sports at the school and has played for Dunbar for many years, Darren conversation with me was NOT about sports. The conversation entailed how do we get my son ready for the next level

This decision that the board has made is unfair, and the voting process was ethical... the decision also has proven to already have a major negative impact on the young men who coach Darran Powell has reached in a positive way over the years. They are the ones who matter the most in this unfortunate situation. The overall goal is to equip these young men with life skills and tools to be successful on and of the field in the present and future. Coach Darran Powell has done just that! THIS IS bigger than football. Your decision is a road block for these young men's future success in life.
