Recognizing accomplishment helps direct a child to an active, productive life. In the "real world" they need to know that good decisions lead to a more fulfilling life. Perhaps, this is the only time they will be recognized in a similar way, but when life gets hard, a child look back and say that doing well, working hard is what they are know for and will uphold those standards.

People work hard for the cords. As somebody who didn’t earn all of the cords I understood the reasoning behind it... it’s not something to be offended about. People need to handle things more maturely- especially since we are taught to be so independent and “self sufficient” at this school.

NOt to mention the fact that giving young adults, going into the real world of business and work, the mentality that everyone is equal no matter how hard you work and that you will always get recognized is a complete lie compared to reality.

There is a far better way to handle situations like this. The parents who complained to have this tradition broken should recognize that not everyone deserves the cords and stoles. The children who have strived for excellence there entire high school career should not be recognized as equals to the students who skipped class and failed to turn assignments in, and not striving for the greatness that is recognized. Not to mention parents and students who harass teachers at the end of the year to bump grades higher in order to get a chord or stole. Parents and students alike sign syllabus’ at the beginning of the year acknowledging that teachers don’t condone grade bumps, or extra credit and now because of this a tradition has been expelled from this high school. Not everyone deserves a trophy.

I am not an Issaquah resident but I feel strongly that students should be recognized for their academic achievements. In many high school sports, the best athletes are given recognition. Why not academics? I noticed that Tillicum Middle School recognized their honor students at graduation but Chinook Middle School did not. I sincerely hope this not a trend.

I am an Issaquah High School Alumni and having those grad stoles and cords made me want to work hard to achieve them! Taking them away doesnt make sense

Maybe the seniors will say they don't care but really do. At least parents and grandparents want to see recognition on their loved ones (in a public forum like graduation) knowing how hard it is to stand out in the high school environment and appreciating their hard work for four years!

This new ruling is a disservice to ALL kids, not just the high achievers. Those who work hard for these honors should be proud, and honored by the school, their families AND their peers. There is a valuable lesson for those who don't - this is the real world - not everyone gets appreciated and praised just for showing up...
