Revamp the Senior Project
For years now, the Senior Project at Valley View High School as served as a beacon on pride for Valley View's administrators and staff as it has been believed to be a great teaching technique for the Seniors of VVHS. However, the Senior Project, though it has been beneficial to some students, has become an outdated model that needs to be modernized. The Senior Project, because of its many faults, has become a burden instead of a useful tool for many students. More specifically, the Senior Project is now something that has become counterproductive to many students, particularly Advanced Placement students. Though it cannot be fixed altogether at once, the Senior Project can be slowly revamped to become what it was meant to be. The first step to this process is to establish a means by which the Senior Project can be prevented from holding back Advanced Placement students--who usually already participate in many extracurricular activities and/or sports, are deeply involved in community service, and are challenging themselves academically as well. The Senior Project, if it aims to be a truly beneficial project at Valley View High School, must become more targeted and centralized. One way of doing this is by creating an exemption for students who meet the following requirements: 1) Take AP Literature (and pass first semester with a C or better); 2) Take at least two or more AP/Honors classes (one AP class of which must be in a core subject area); 3) Be involved in fifteen or more hours of extracurricular activities, sports, the arts, or community service per semester (and have the ability to prove said involvement); 4) Complete the required first semester Senior Research Paper (and receive a score of a C or better on it); and 5) Maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA freshman through junior year. The creation of this exemption is the goal of the Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/RevampTheSeniorProject/info). In order to be able to revamp the senior project we wish to obtain signatures, as evidence of support, to present to the VVHS Staff and the MVUSD School Board.
