Kent State finally agreed to cut the plastic and move toward reusable bags. I am proud that we forced the administration to ditch their wasteful habits and clean up our campus.

We are trying to implement the use of reusable bags on campus so that we may reduce and eventually eliminate the use of plastic bags at KSU. According to a survey taken during the Fall 2013 semester, the average student on Kent's campus uses 3.93 plastic bags per week - with approximately 6,200 students living on-campus, that adds up to 24,366 plastic bags per week. If you are interested in living on a greener campus, please sign our petition to bring reusable bags to KSU.

If you would like to know more about the negative effects of plastic bags, the benefits of reusable bags, or about this project and how to get involved, please contact Carly at [email protected].

The administration at Kent State continues to ignore the thousands of plastic bags piling up in our trash bins every week. They hope we will just get tired and walk away but we have no intention of letting them off the hook for this mess.

Eliminating plastic bags from the markets on campus would be inconvenient, and nobody can deny that. Instead of completely getting rid of them, KSU could offer a small percentage discount to students who use their own bag, as a nice incentive and show of support. I just like the idea of making this movement more attractive to students, rather than forcing it on them.

I would definitely use these new bags and it would be so much healthier for the planet...also they are thicker than plastic bags which are usually torn by the time I get home..

I have so many plastic bags in my dorm, I started to reuse them and take a few down with me whenever I go to Rosie's. Reusuable bags would be cool.

I try to keep the plastic bags so I'm not wasting them, but I rarely use them. So it's pointless for me to save them. A reusable bag would be very beneficial!

I believe we should be implementing many more green strategies like reusable bags on our Kent campus. As well as making more recycling bins available across campus and putting more of a emphasis on recycling in general as many students don't even recycle in their dorms or houses.

I love reusable bags, I use my Heinens bags all the time; they're a practical and simple way to cut down on unnecessary waste.
