The Dyfs organization in my situation with my newborn was inadequate in our State of New Jersey. DYFS failed to consider all of the facts involved in my cses, concerning the custody matter involving my five-year old daughter. MY relatives were told that they would be forced to adopt my child,or that she would have to be placed into a foster home. I was not living with her father at that time, and my parent is deceased. I am a college graduate and a substitute teacher. I had taken the time off from working while pregnant, and I was living with friends in another address. After I gave birth to her , DYFS took her to live in a group home. I was never advised of my options or told where to go with her for a comfortable living arrangement. I was, however, later told to take a parenting class through the DYFS agency and did. I received a certificate of completion. I was advised to have my cousin help me with a kinship guardianship. I did. Well, after that, my cousin informed me that DYFS would offer her financial assistance to adopt my daughter. She took the offer. Then she changed her mind. Now my daughther is living in another State with another relative. I have gone to court to gain custody and visitation rights, and have to hire an attorney. My attorney stated that I may have a pretty good case, since my child has been involved with me since birth. I visit, I buy good and clothes, I take her to different places, and I pay rent in a one-bedroom apartment. I have a fiance who showed me a house for rent, so my child will have more space to play and to have other children as friends here. My cousin lives one and 1/2 hours away, and I would take the bus to see her on weekends or she would sleep over here. Now she is living 14 hours away, and we cannot seem to get adequate phone calles or a visitation schedule. The cousin that she is living with is in the middle of a divorce herself, and seems to be alienating me from my child. I haven't seen Brianna in a year. Along with having an attorney help me with this case, my goal is to have the DYFS agency in the State of New Jersey reevaluated under closer scrutiny in the State of New Jersey. I was told that the goal of the DYFS organization is to reunite the children with the family. However, this is not the case. My cousin and I feel that housing should have been provided to me as my daughter's primary caretaker and as her mother. Taxpayers' dollars must be able to provide Social Services for families to help them to survive in difficult family situations.
