this should be done with no questions ask. just the number of years he played should be enough. look at what his point totals etc. if you can do this for #99 than #9 is a given

It NEEDS TO be retired. Every person playing hockey knows who Gordie Howe was! He is the true meaning of LEGEND. I hope this truly happens.

I was just thinking the same thing. 42 has been retired by the entire MLB league. It's only fitting that the NHL follow suit and retire #9 league wide

Although alot of other great players wore #9, it should be retired because one of the most historical players to the game is now gone physically and we should respect his accomplishments alot like Gretzky as Gretzky wore 99 for Howe.
And for future, there should be a gate you have to pass in order to get your number retired to prevent running out of numbers.

Please retire number 9 in honor of Gordie Howe, a true hockey legend not just in Detroit, but throughout the league. Current players should be allowed to wear number 9 until they retire, but it should not be available to new players.
