He's the best player we've ever had. First to win the Heisman and a slew of other awards. He led us to victories in the Fiesta, Alamo, and Rose Bowl. Beyond all that, he is a remarkably humble guy. He is a great ambassador for the school and deserves it no matter how much it might embarass him.

First Heisman winner? Greatest season in Oregon history? If you're going to retire any numbers at all, you have to go with Marcus.

Marcus is the epitome of The University of Oregon and Oregon Duck Football. A class act, a true sportsman and a role model to all, young or old!

In addition to accomplishing feats that no Oregon player had previously accomplished, Marcus matched his on-field accomplishments with his off-field contributions to the Ducks and general community as a selfless and humble person. He touched many lives while he was here as well as leaving a remarkable legacy on the football field. Between his on-field and off-field achievements, Marcus has clearly done enough to be the first Oregon player to have his number retired.
