In a nutshell if you are under the age of 17 or over the age of 59 or legally handicapped you can shoot 1 deer of any sex with a bow, and 1 deer of any sex with a gun. If you are between 16 and 60 you may be able to shoot a deer of either sex in either season if you draw a hunters choice tag for the specific season you apply.

Hunters who are eligible for an automatic hunters choice tag must purchase their license 3 months in advance of opening day for each season. Forcing young, and old hunters to buy their tags early, gives the dnr enough time to total the amount of automatic hunters choice recipients, and assign the balance of the hunters choice tags to the applicants in the 17 to 59 year old group.

Hunters under the age of 17, can purchase a bow hunting license that enables them to shoot either a buck or a doe.

Hunters under the age of 17, can purchase a gun hunting license that enables them to shoot a buck or a doe.

Hunters over the age of 59, can purchase a bow hunting license that enables them to shoot either a buck or a doe.

Hunters over the age of 59, can purchase a gun hunting license that enables them to shoot either a buck or a doe.

All legally disabled hunters can purchase a bow hunting license that enables them to shoot either a buck or a doe.

All legally disabled hunters can purchase a gun hunting license that enables them to shoot a buck or a doe.

All non disabled hunters who fall into the 17 year old to 59 year old category must apply for a hunters choice tag in their chosen deer management unit to shoot a doe during bow season.

All hunters who fall into the 17 year old to 59 year old group who wish to shoot a doe during the gun hunting season, must apply for their hunters choice tag 3 months before the opening day of gun season.

All doe tags issued to each hunter are deer management unit specific. Does must be killed in the DMZ the hunters choice tag was issued for.

Any hunter under 17, or over 59 that does not purchase their license 3 months prior to the season, goes into the pool of hunters in the 17, to 59 age group.

After 2 years this entire program is re-evaluated.
