I am Native American and I went to school at Belding and yes when I was a child who didn't know much about the name and my culture I too was proud to be a 'redskin.' It wasn't until i was old enough to care/research the idea behind the derogatory meaning of the name. I totally disagree with wanting to keep the name because "we've always been the redskins" it's time to listen to the true native Americans and if you want to show honor, change the name. Teach the culture in schools at sporting events embrace the real meaning of being proud to be a Native American. This word is derived from back when my ancestors were being scalped and sold for bounty. Does the word 'redskin' after knowing the meaning sound like its honoring is? Hell no! Get rid of the name. And if you'd like to honor natives educate the community as well as yourself to the heritage culture and beauty of the real natives. We are more than just a mascot and we deserve better than to be stereotype in negative ways.

The Redskins logo was, has been and always will be something I take pride in for Belding! We've never had anyone to my knowledge protest to our use of the Indian head logo. It represents who we are as a school an a community in my eyes. I know for a fact we had students even when I attended school that were Native American and they too took much pride in wearing the "Orange & Black" of Belding under the name Redskins!

We as a community look to honor Native Americans by displaying our Redskin name and mascot proudly as it is the least we could do in light of all that they have given to our country.
