Recess and down time should be mandatory in a school day...as well as physical activity. Society wonders why all the suicide, depression, anxiety and other problems happen.

It is imperative that the school consider the recess for providing the healthy environment that will benefit kids academic performance and also help build social skills which are equally important to be successful in their future endeavors

AAP and CDC state recess is a critical child need. A need. Critical. How does BASIS respond? Cutting recess for test prep and excess homework is way off-trend. BASIS is neglecting child health for its rep. Shameful. In addition, using recess for tutoring violates a vetted and longstanding ADE professional standard.

The current schedule is child abuse and does not work to actually improve test scores. These children deserve a better and happier education.

As my son stated 5th grade at Basis Peoria, his main complains were not about intense academics and extreme amount of homework, but primarily about not being able to catch a break in between classes. Additionally, recess is the only opportunity for these kids during the school day to learn social networking, to make new friends, and to understand rules of their little school community. They need such interaction to growth into fully functional members of our society.
