The Gilbert School Board is planning to cut more than $1.5 million dollars from the Special Education Budget for the 2015/2016 school year. These cuts will eliminate jobs, reduce services, increase class size, turn away qualified families; negatively and permanently impacting one of our most vulnerable and growing populations, and limiting their future contributions to our community.
The Gilbert Public School system and its Special Education programs are exemplary, and often recognized for their excellence in the state. Many, many tax payers make the choice to live in the Gilbert school district based upon this excellent reputation and the high quality of life our public schools afford all of its citizens.
We, the undersigned, live and work in Gilbert School District, and our children are enrolled in the Gilbert Public School system. We urge our elected representatives on the Gilbert School Board to 1) conduct difficult public budget discussions with complete transparency; 2) offer parent stakeholders and families formal opportunities to be heard before 'working' budget decisions are set in motion for the 2015/2016 school year; 3) formally seek a budget over-ride in the district to help stem the tide of ongoing public education budget cuts and offset Federal and state cuts.
