As a paying professional member (+ ACM Digital Library), I urge you to listen to the community and reconsider. We should work towards a scientific community devoid of barriers and walls erected for profits. Let’s strive to avoid building a scientific world of haves and have nots.

In support of open, free access to scientific knowledge. Even if ACM currently operates at deficit, access should be open to students, early career and independent researchers.

Paywall benefits none except the rich and privileged. Any form of paywall, no matter how well coated with euphemism, is bad for majority of the scholars. Many schools and institutions can't afford paywalled content and so can't their students, educators and other scholars. Independent researchers, journalists and activists rely on open access. Paywalls put critical research in grave danger.

Very curious that this “feature” was not mentioned in communications about ACM’s transition to OA. Disappointing to say the least. Contradicts the spirit of OA. An ironic sidebar: currently my students can’t even use the paywalled features from within my institution, which is among those footing the bill for ACM OA in my country.

In industry, it is an axiom that no company change its access policies without conducting and circulating a formal impact review. In the absence of such an impact statement, why move forward with such a drastic access change?
