Dear TAS parents, Had unexpected feedback from my one previous post on this site. Apparently most parents do not know that under the bylaws of the school, since the school started, any student being kicked out of the school has the right to have their case reviewed by the school board. Or “had” the right, until just a few months ago, when the school board REMOVED THIS RIGHT FROM THE BYLAWS, I am just told. Again, I am not a parent, this is all second hand, so you need to read the 990 filings yourselves, or go into the school and ask for copies of all recent bylaw changes. You as members have the full legal right to be provided copies of everything done in the open sessions. But if true, parents, you better stand up, protect yourselves... you and your children have rights, including the right to put this review procedure BACK IN THE BYLAWS, even retroactively. Are you saying top US Private Schools generally punish students without transparency and without any independent review process?! Is this democracy or totalitarian state?

Dear Anonymous, I think it's hard to generalize about how elite schools handle different types of infractions and mete out punishment. Some of them are quite adept at covering up/denying malfeasance by students; think of the case of sexual assault alleged by a female student at Hennessy's former school, St. Paul's in Concord, NH. The alleged victim was expelled and published her memoir this summer, an excerpt of which just appeared in The New Yorker. I realize your statement concerned racial discrimination and harassment, not sexual assault, but still the case suggests that there are no absolute criteria among elite schools with regard to discipline. I don't excuse the boys but I do think they need to learn how and why their words contribute to the denigration of other people of color, and why that isn't acceptable. Can we reasonably believe that 14-year old boys would most effectively gain this understanding by being given up on? Punishment there should be, but the school has an obligation to teach all of its students how to be culturally competent global citizens, which means educating them in matters of race and racial identity. If we assume that the only response to knowing or unknowing acts of racism is to reject the child, how and when will the child be made to see things differently?

Jeff – Good to hear from you, trust you and your family are all staying very safe. Yes, reading the Form 990 , especially the recent changes to the By laws, is mandatory reading for all TAS parents, as to parents powers. Additionally, my personal interest is this “independent” person or group appointed this spring to investigate the question of sexual predation a few years back. I was on that board, so of great personal interest. Am no longer a parent, so all I hear is second hand, but what I have been told by various parties gives me a queasy feeling about both the independence of the investigators but also the thoroughness of the probe. Yes, been “feeling” this growth of mistrust at TAS for some years now... disturbing. Not sure exact source, but certainly its there, as this comment chain alone affirms. Take care, stay safe.
