Request for Cancellation or Alternative Assessment for IGCSE may/june 2026 Exams in the Middle East
We, IGCSE students across the Middle East, respectfully urge Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Aqa to reconsider the requirement for students in our region to sit the May/June 2026 examinations under the current circumstances.
Students in countries including the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Iran, Palestine, and Iraq are currently living in a region affected by ongoing conflict, geopolitical instability, and widespread uncertainty. Airspace restrictions, travel disruptions, and the constant risk of escalation are significantly impacting daily life.
Even in areas not directly affected by violence, students are experiencing heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and fear. These conditions make it extremely difficult to prepare effectively for IGCSE examinations, which already demand a high level of focus, stability, and academic readiness.
The issue is not solely whether exams can physically take place, but whether students can fairly and realistically prepare for them. Many students are struggling to concentrate and study due to safety concerns and the overall instability of the region. As a result, students in the Middle East are placed at a clear disadvantage compared to those in more stable environments.
We are not calling for a global cancellation of exams. Instead, we ask Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Aqa to acknowledge the exceptional circumstances in our region and implement fair, region-specific alternatives. These may include a non-exam route based on coursework, internal assessments, and predicted grades, or adjustments to grade boundaries for affected countries.
Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Aqa promote values of fairness, equity, and student wellbeing. We respectfully ask that these values be upheld by reconsidering the May/June 2026 IGCSE examinations for students in the Middle East and providing appropriate alternatives that reflect the reality we are facing.
We urge Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Aqa to act with fairness and understanding in support of its students during this challenging time
